The conservation and development of medicinal plants<\/strong> is considered one of the key tasks<\/strong> in the long-term economic development strategy<\/strong> of Thai Nguyen Province<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the afternoon of June 2<\/strong>, Mr. Duong Van Luong<\/strong>, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee<\/strong>, presided over a conference<\/strong> on the current status, policies, and feasibility of cultivating and producing medicinal plants in Thai Nguyen Province<\/strong>. The conference was attended by leaders of relevant departments, agencies, associations, and the Institute for Forestry Research and Development – University of Agriculture and Forestry (Thai Nguyen University).<\/strong><\/p>\n

A representative from the Institute for Forestry Research and Development<\/strong> presented a report on the current status, development orientation of Vietnam\u2019s medicinal plant industry, and recommendations for the strategic development of medicinal plants in the province<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to the Traditional Medicine Management Department<\/strong>, Vietnam’s annual demand for medicinal plants is 60,000 – 80,000 tons<\/strong>, with an annual consumption of over 50,000 tons<\/strong>. However, the production, processing, and usage scale of Vietnam\u2019s medicinal plant industry remains small, fragmented, and inefficient<\/strong>, while some valuable medicinal plants are at risk of depletion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To ensure the medicinal plant industry<\/strong> meets domestic demand and export potential<\/strong>, the central government<\/strong> has introduced various policies to support medicinal plant development<\/strong>, focusing on three key orientations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

  1. \n

    Re-evaluating the role of medicinal plants at national and local levels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Developing medicinal plants based on market demand<\/strong>, primarily for domestic needs while targeting exports.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Restructuring the entire medicinal plant industry<\/strong>, covering all stages from seed selection, cultivation, harvesting, and production<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Through field surveys<\/strong>, the Institute for Forestry Research and Development<\/strong> found that Thai Nguyen Province<\/strong> has many advantages for developing the medicinal plant industry<\/strong>, such as:<\/p>\n

    • \n

      Favorable soil and climate conditions<\/strong> suitable for medicinal plant cultivation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Diverse medicinal plant resources<\/strong>, including both plant-based and animal-based medicinal materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Existing medicinal plant cultivation models<\/strong> in the province, such as C\u00e1t s\u00e2m, \u0110inh l\u0103ng, Ba k\u00edch, Kh\u00f4i nhung, S\u1ea1 \u0111en, Ngh\u1ec7, Gi\u1ea3o c\u1ed5 lam, Sa nh\u00e2n, and S\u00e2m b\u1ed1 ch\u00ednh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Preferential policies from central to local governments<\/strong> to support medicinal plant development.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      However, the implementation of medicinal plant cultivation and production in the province remains fragmented, lacking a comprehensive plan and long-term development strategy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      The Institute for Forestry Research and Development<\/strong> proposed several development directions<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n

      • \n

        Formulating and approving a conservation and development plan for medicinal plants in Thai Nguyen Province until 2025, with a vision to 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Establishing policies to encourage organizations and enterprises to invest in medicinal plant cultivation, development, and processing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Introducing incentive mechanisms for businesses and individual households to invest in medicinal plant farming and development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Attracting high-tech science and technology enterprises to research and effectively apply biotechnology<\/strong> for conservation, breeding, and high-value product development<\/strong> from medicinal plants.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        During the conference, participants discussed plans for zoning raw material areas, production, processing, and market consumption of medicinal plant products<\/strong>. The attendees agreed to propose that the Provincial People’s Committee assign specialized agencies to develop a plan for medicinal plant development in Thai Nguyen for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        In his concluding remarks, Mr. Duong Van Luong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee<\/strong>, emphasized that the development of the province\u2019s medicinal plant industry must follow a clear roadmap<\/strong>, including pilot models for selecting economically viable medicinal plants<\/strong>, which can later be expanded and adapted to different regions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        He assigned the Institute for Forestry Research and Development<\/strong>, in coordination with relevant departments and agencies, to complete an assessment report on the current status, development orientation, and solutions for the medicinal plant sector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Based on this report, relevant departments will advise the Provincial People’s Committee on approving a conservation and development plan for medicinal plants<\/strong> in Thai Nguyen Province. Additionally, the province will seek investment from capable enterprises in production, processing, and product consumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
