Caring for, nurturing, and admiring the elegant beauty of orchids helps people find peace and connect with nature. In fact, the way one cultivates orchids can also reflect their personality and soul.

Recently, there has been a surge of information about “mutant” orchids, accompanied by costly transactions reaching hundreds of millions to billions of VND. These reports have further heated up the orchid market, drawing widespread public attention.

Also deeply interested in orchids, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Thu Ha – Director of the Institute for Forestry Research and Development at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry – has been quietly researching, preserving, and developing rare orchids. This orchid belongs to Group 2A and is being heavily sought after and collected, facing the risk of depletion. The research team has worked on selecting, cultivating, and propagating it through in-vitro techniques.

The mother plant, which contains high medicinal compounds, is disease-free, and grows well, will be sterilized to create initial materials, regenerating shoots, forming shoot clusters, developing roots, and inducing plant growth. This entire process takes about 3-4 months. As this orchid is sensitive to direct sunlight and high temperatures, it is being tested in suitable environments in provinces such as Ha Giang, Lang Son, and Bac Kan.

Thach Hoc Tia Orchid is another highly valuable species, serving as an excellent medicinal resource for treating cancer and stomach ailments. Currently, this orchid is being propagated on a large scale under semi-natural conditions before being attached to trees in high mountainous areas to ensure biodiversity conservation. Every year, the center produces millions of seedlings, generating jobs and economic benefits for local communities.

Similarly, Hai Orchid is another rare species being propagated in large quantities by the Institute, supporting the production of medicinal products for cancer treatment and physical enhancement.

A garden of club moss plants, carefully cultivated and developed at the Biotechnology Center.

In addition to orchid species, the center has successfully bred, preserved, and expanded numerous other valuable medicinal herbs such as Dinh Lang (Polyscias fruticosa), Gung Gio (Zingiber zerumbet), and Club Moss (Huperzia serrata). Notably, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Thu Ha and her research team have used molecular marker technology to identify the Club Moss species, analyze its medicinal compounds, and register 11 characteristic gene sequences of Club Moss in the NCBI gene bank. This achievement is particularly significant as Club Moss is a valuable medicinal plant used for treating Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, brain atrophy, and dementia.

The approach taken by Assoc.
