Variety Description

Name: The red rose apple, scientifically known as Prunus domestica L., belongs to the Rosaceae family.

The Red Rose Apple variety sold by the Center is a vegetatively propagated species with strong growth ability, high yield, stable quality, and fast fruiting.

Morphological Characteristics

The rose apple is a tropical evergreen tree that can grow up to 12 meters tall. Its leaves are 10–25 cm long and 5–10 cm wide. The flowers are white, 2.5 cm in diameter, with four petals and numerous stamens. The fruit is a bell-shaped, edible berry, ranging in color from white to deep red. Flowers and fruit can grow not only from leaf axils but also from almost any point on the trunk and branches.

Ecological Characteristics

Rose apple can grow in various soil types, including yellow soil, yellow-red soil, feralit soil, ancient alluvial soil, new alluvial soil along rivers, and even coastal sandy soil. However, it grows best in sandy or sandy-loam soil. Compared to other fruit trees, the rose apple is highly resistant to pests and diseases, with strong tolerance to waterlogging and drought.

2. Planting and Care Techniques

Planting Season

Rose apples can be planted year-round, but the best time is at the beginning of the rainy season. For small-scale planting, different seasons are possible as long as extreme heat and frost are avoided.

Planting Density

The ideal planting density is 4×4 meters, with a row spacing of 5 meters.

Soil Preparation, Fertilization, and Planting

Soil Preparation:

Lowland areas: Create planting mounds 0.6-0.8 meters wide and 0.3-0.6 meters high.

Sloped land: If the slope is less than 7%, plant at ground level. On steep slopes, plant 10-20 cm below ground level.

Base Fertilization: Each mound can be enriched with 0.5 kg lime powder, 0.3 kg phosphate fertilizer, and 5-10 kg of well-decomposed organic fertilizer.

Planting Method: Dig a small hole at the planting site. Cut the bottom of the plant’s plastic bag, place the plant in position, and carefully remove the bag. Cover the roots with soil, compacting gently. Use a stake to support the tree and tie it with a plastic rope.

Care Techniques

Moisture Retention: Use easily available materials such as straw or dry grass to mulch around the base and retain moisture.

Watering: Provide regular water, especially during the early growth stage and dry periods. Before flowering, keep the base dry. During fruit-bearing, the tree requires ample water for fruit development. Lack of water reduces yield and fruit quality.

Pruning and Canopy Formation: Remove overgrown, old, or diseased branches to improve light penetration and photosynthesis. Keep the tree height around 3.5 meters.

Soil Enrichment: Annually add a 2-3 cm thick layer of soil (such as silt or dry soil) around the base and apply organic or chemical fertilizers.

Fertilization

Organic Fertilizer: Apply 10-15 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer (e.g., cattle, pig, or goat manure, decomposed straw). Dig 3-4 holes (40x40x40 cm) around the tree canopy, apply the fertilizer, and cover with soil.

Chemical Fertilizer:

Year 1: Apply 500 grams of NPK 16-16-8, split into 4-5 applications per year.

Year 2: Double the amount used in Year 1, split into 3-4 applications.

Fruit-bearing Stage: Apply 1.5-3 kg of NPK 20-20-15 in multiple applications. Remove 50-60% of flowers and fruits to enhance quality. Increase potassium and calcium for better fruit color and sweetness. After harvest, apply 0.5-1 kg of NPK 20-20-15 to help the tree recover and prepare for the next fruiting season.

3. Pest and Disease Control

Pests

Leaf-eating Caterpillars: These pests damage young shoots, leading to stunted growth. Use pesticides like Vifast 5ND, Desic 2.5ND, or Basudin 50EC.

Aphids, Mealybugs, Scale Insects: These insects attack young shoots, causing curled leaves and black mold growth on fruits. Use Bassan 50ND, Supracide 40ND, or Polytrin 10ND.

Stem and Branch Borers: Larvae bore into the branches and trunk, weakening and eventually killing the tree. Use Vibasu 10H, Vicarp 10H, or Regent for periodic treatment.

Fruit Borers: These insects burrow into the fruit, reducing quality. Use low-toxicity insecticides like Polytrin P440ND, Vertmec 1.8ND, or Treon during early fruit development. Bagging fruits can also prevent infestations.

Fruit Flies: Use biological bait like Vizubon-D or hydrolyzed protein traps to reduce fruit fly populations without harming the environment. Bagging fruits with plastic bags after pest control treatment is also effective.

Diseases

Rose apples are generally not highly susceptible to diseases. However, after fruit setting, prevent fruit rot using Ridomyl MZ 72 BHN, Tilt 250ND, or Score 250ND, following manufacturer guidelines.

4. Harvesting

Harvest when fruits reach optimal ripeness for transportation without compromising quality. Rose apples have thin, delicate skin that is easily damaged. Handle fruits carefully during harvesting and use appropriate containers to prevent bruising during transportation.

1.
