The fruit is large, weighing between 25-30g per apple, with a strong fragrance, making it ideal for processing into syrup, juice, or fruit wine. This variety produces high and stable yields, often bearing fruit twice a year in certain regions: the summer harvest (ripe in August-September) and the winter harvest (ripe in December-January). A tree aged 3-5 years can yield 60-100 kg of fruit per season.

Gia Loc apples are grown in both northern and southern Vietnam. The optimal temperature range is 25-32°C. The tree adapts well to different soil types but thrives in sandy loam, riverine alluvial soils with sufficient moisture and a pH between 5-7.

1. Planting Season

The best planting time is during the spring season.

2. Spacing and Planting Density

Distance between trees: 4-5m apart.

Distance between rows: 5-6m apart.

Dig planting holes 40cm deep and 60-80cm wide. Apply 30kg of organic manure, 0.5kg of lime powder, and 1kg of superphosphate fertilizer mixed with topsoil to the bottom of the hole. Fill the hole one month before planting.

3. Care and Maintenance

Watering and Pruning

Apple trees require ample water, especially during fruit development. Without sufficient moisture, the fruits will remain small and have a bitter taste.

Pruning is essential for maintaining tree productivity and fruit quality. There are two pruning methods:

Light pruning: Done annually after each harvest. Cut back fruiting branches, leaving 20-30cm stubs. These stubs will sprout new shoots, which should be thinned to ensure an even distribution.

Heavy pruning: Used to shape the tree while it is young. Cut back all branches, leaving only the base of a few strong branches from the previous year. This encourages new, vigorous growth and improves yield and fruit quality.

4. Pest and Disease Control

Common Diseases

Root rot and trunk cracking: Affected trees have sparse foliage, pale green leaves that fall off, and withering branches. The roots rot, eventually killing the tree. Prevention includes avoiding excessive soil moisture.

Branch dieback: Caused by the fungus Colletotrichum cloeosporioides, which invades branches and kills them. It can also infect mature fruit, causing rot. High sunlight exposure over long periods can worsen the condition.

Fruit skin diseases: Certain fungi attack developing fruit, forming small black spots or cross-shaped marks, causing cracks and reducing market value. Prevention includes maintaining a well-ventilated orchard, clearing plant debris, and spraying protective fungicides after fruit set.

Powdery mildew on leaves: This disease has minor impacts, as it typically occurs when the tree is already bearing fruit. To prevent it, graft trees after September and avoid early pruning, as young shoots exposed to temperatures below 20°C are more susceptible.

Fruit rot: This disease commonly occurs when fruit is nearing maturity. It spreads quickly, potentially destroying the entire crop within a week.

Common Pests

Root pests: Common culprits include termites, grubs, crickets, and ants, particularly sap-sucking mealybugs found in the top 50cm of soil. Infected trees show yellowing leaves and slow decline.

Stink bugs: These insects suck sap from young shoots and leaves, causing wilting and stunted growth. They also attack young fruit, leaving black spots that lead to premature fruit drop and fungal infections, significantly reducing yield and quality.

Stem borers: These pests create small holes in branches and trunks, often accompanied by white fungal growth. They appear mid-to-late rainy season and peak in the dry season. Although the holes are small, they disrupt the tree’s growth and make branches more prone to breaking.

5.
