Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development conducts field surveys for IKEA-supported reforestation project in Phu Xuyen and Thanh Thinh communes

Date

Within the framework of implementing the project on large-timber acacia plantations and native tree species adapted to climate change (supported by IKEA) in Thai Nguyen Province, a working delegation from the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development (IFSD) – Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) conducted working sessions with local authorities in Phu Xuyen and Thanh Thinh communes to survey on-site conditions, exchange information, and assess the potential for project participation. The delegation was led by Dr. Do Hoang Chung, Vice Director of the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development, together with heads of departments and technical staff of the Institute.

In Phu Xuyen Commune, the delegation worked with Mr. Ha Thanh Son, Chairman of the People’s Committee of the commune, and Mr. Hoang Cong Toan, Head of the Commune Economic Division. In Thanh Thinh Commune, the delegation worked with Mr. Le Quang Huy, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of the commune, officers in charge of forestry from the Economic Division, and village heads from the locality.

During the working sessions, the Institute introduced an overview of the objectives, contents, and implementation orientation of the sustainable forest plantation project, while also exchanging views and listening to feedback from local authorities, village heads, and local residents regarding forestry production in the area. Discussions focused on technical challenges in forest planting and management, including appropriate planting density, pest and disease issues, plantation productivity, as well as matters related to participation in and maintenance of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. In addition, the delegation reviewed and assessed the current status of plantation forest development in the localities, where more than 500 hectares of plantation forests have already been certified under FSC standards, providing a favorable foundation for studying the integration, expansion, and implementation of project activities in the coming period.

Through the working sessions and exchanges with commune authorities, village heads, and local residents, the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development has gained an initial understanding of the current status of forestry production, practical needs, and concerns of local communities. The collected inputs serve as an important basis for the Institute to further synthesize information, conduct research, and propose appropriate technical solutions and implementation options, contributing to improved forestry production efficiency and the promotion of sustainable forest management in the area.
