Vietnam Forestry Day – Launching the “Uncle Ho’s Forest” Tree Planting Campaign and Announcing the Resolution to Rename the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development

Date

On the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the traditional day of the Vietnam forestry sector (November 28, 1959 – November 28, 2021), on the morning of November 28, 2021, the University of Agriculture and Forestry organized a tree planting ceremony to launch the “Uncle Ho’s Forest” and officially announced the decision to rename the Institute of Forestry Research and Development to the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development.

Attending the launching ceremony were leaders from the Thai Nguyen Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and leaders of the People’s Committee of Quyet Thang commune. From the university side, the ceremony welcomed Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hung – Party Secretary, Chairman of the University Council; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hung Quang – Rector; Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu – Vice Rector; along with leaders of departments within the university.

On November 28, 1959, President Ho Chi Minh made a call for the Tree Planting Festival. Since then, the forestry sector of Vietnam has recognized this date as Vietnam Forestry Day. In line with President Ho’s vision and the current orientation of the Party and Government, planting a forest at a university in the Viet Bac region symbolizes both “heart” and “mind.” The university has approved a policy to develop “Uncle Ho’s Forest” with the aim of creating a multi-layered, multi-canopy forest ecosystem, serving as a traditional site for tree planting activities for visiting provincial leaders, university leadership, and alumni in the years to come. At the same time, it will serve as a center for conserving rare and precious genetic resources of flora and fauna from Thai Nguyen province and the northern mountainous region.

On the morning of November 28, 2021, the University of Agriculture and Forestry held the launching ceremony for planting “Uncle Ho’s Forest” to commemorate Vietnam Forestry Day. The forest is located in the experimental hill area managed by the Institute of Forestry Research and Development. All delegates joined university leaders in planting commemorative trees.

Leaders from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the university planted commemorative trees at Uncle Ho’s Forest.

At the ceremony, the University Council also officially announced the Resolution to rename the Institute of Forestry Research and Development to the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development, elevating its role in the forestry sector. The Institute now operates as a multidisciplinary unit, tasked with conducting in-depth research, technology transfer, and education in the fields of forestry science and technology, natural resources and environmental management, contributing to the sustainable socio-economic development of the northern midland and mountainous provinces and the country as a whole.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hung, Party Secretary and Chairman of the University Council, handed over the renaming resolution to the leadership of the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development.

On this special day, faculty members and staff of the Faculty of Forestry and the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development gathered to commemorate memorable moments and actively participated in the tree planting campaign for “Uncle Ho’s Forest.”
