Research on the Propagation of Jewel Orchid (Anoectochilus setaceus Blume) Using In Vitro Method

Date

The Orchidaceae family is one of the most diverse plant families in Vietnam, with a total of 865 species across 154 genera. Vietnam is home to a vast reserve of wild orchids, many of which hold significant value, such as Vanda, Paphiopedilum, Cymbidium, and Dendrobium. Among them, the Jewel Orchid is renowned not only for its medicinal properties but also for its ability to enhance human health.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jewel Orchid has been used to treat diabetes, tumor reduction, blood lipid reduction, and hepatitis. A 1924 study in Chinese medicine claimed that the entire plant could be used to boost health, treat lung diseases, nocturnal emissions, premature ejaculation, liver and spleen deficiencies, and snakebite wounds. Additionally, it is known to improve blood circulation, detoxify the body, and promote healing.

Modern medicine has analyzed and confirmed that Anoectochilus contains highly important pharmacological compounds, including flavonoids, steroids, triterpenoids, amino acids, and various trace minerals. These compounds have been shown to treat tuberculosis, bronchitis-induced cough, chronic gastritis, nerve weakness, abdominal and chest pain, nephritis, high fever, and snakebite wounds.

Beyond its medicinal benefits, Jewel Orchid also holds high economic value. However, due to overexploitation, it is now at risk of extinction in the wild. Currently, Jewel Orchid is listed as an endangered species under Group IA of Decree 32/2006/CP, prohibiting commercial exploitation. It is also classified as an endangered plant species (EN A1 a, c, d) in the Vietnam Red Book (2007).

To address this issue, the Institute of Forestry Research and Development – Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry has successfully applied plant cell culture technology to propagate Jewel Orchid through in vitro methods. This method has produced disease-free, high-quality seedlings with genetic uniformity, retaining the superior traits of the mother plant. Additionally, the high propagation coefficient ensures that large-scale production demands can be met.
