Research on Propagation of Red Polygonum (Fallopia multiflora (Thunb)) Using In Vitro Method

Date

Red Polygonum is known as a longevity tonic, belonging to the group of medicinal herbs that provide energy and strength. This herb does not offer temporary energy boosts but rather has a deeper and more lasting effect.

Red Polygonum has an astringent, sweet, and slightly bitter taste, with a mildly warm nature. According to traditional Eastern medicine, in addition to its well-known use for darkening hair, Red Polygonum also has benefits such as nourishing the blood, calming the mind, supporting liver and kidney health, enhancing vitality, improving digestion, and treating malaria. It is commonly used as a tonic for the liver and kidneys, strengthening the body, relieving back pain, and promoting hair growth over prolonged use.

From a Western medicine perspective, Red Polygonum helps treat nervous exhaustion and neurological disorders, supports heart health, stimulates blood production, enhances digestion, and has mild estrogen- and progesterone-like effects. It also aids lactation, reduces bronchial spasms, and has anti-inflammatory properties. A decoction of Red Polygonum at a 1/100 concentration can inhibit the growth of tuberculosis bacteria. Additionally, its alcohol extract may help prevent atherosclerosis, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and inhibit lipid accumulation in the blood.

Currently, the Institute of Forestry Research and Development has successfully stabilized the production of Red Polygonum seedlings using in vitro cell culture techniques and supplies them in large quantities for plantation purposes.
