Welcome Message from the Director of the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development
Dear visitors,
On behalf of the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development, I am delighted to welcome you and thank you for your interest in our institute.
The Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development (hereinafter referred to as the Institute) is a public scientific and technological organization under the University of Agriculture and Forestry, which was renamed from the Institute of Forestry Research and Development following Resolution No. 27/NQ-HĐT, dated November 26, 2021, issued by the Chairman of the University Council.
As an independent entity, the Institute undertakes research, technology transfer, and the provision of products and services in the fields of forestry, agriculture, and environmental sciences, contributing to sustainable economic and social development across Vietnam, particularly in the northern regions. With over 10 years of experience in scientific research and technology, along with modern infrastructure and advanced equipment, the Institute has made significant achievements in forestry and environmental research and technology transfer. These contributions have supported forestry business development and rural economic growth in mountainous areas, while also strengthening the mission of the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen University.
The Institute has implemented various research projects at local, ministerial, national, and international levels in the fields of forestry plant breeding, medicinal plants, intensive afforestation, and forestry policy development in mountainous regions. Notably, we have gained a strong reputation in consultancy services for numerous international projects on forestry, biotechnology in forestry, information technology, rural development, biodiversity conservation, afforestation, and payment for environmental services.
We have established extensive collaborations with ministries, governmental agencies, research institutes, universities, and forestry enterprises in Vietnam and abroad. With support from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) of Australia, we have strengthened our scientific cooperation, trained high-quality human resources, and developed superior forestry seed materials. As a result, the Institute has successfully established high-quality seed orchards, gene banks, and clonal gardens to meet the growing demand for superior forestry seedlings. Currently, the Institute manages nearly 200 hectares dedicated to research, seed testing, conservation, and commercial seedling production.
Every year, the Institute supplies 8-10 million high-quality seedlings, including forestry species, medicinal plants, specialty crops, and high-value fruit trees, produced through tissue culture, cutting, and grafting techniques. The Institute has become a trusted provider of premium forestry and medicinal plant seedlings in Vietnam. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has consistently recognized our outstanding contributions in supplying high-quality plant varieties for forest development in recent years.
Forests play an increasingly vital role not only in economic and social development and as a primary source of income for communities living in and around forests but also in environmental protection. The severe consequences of forest degradation—such as soil erosion, landslides, floods, and desertification—highlight the urgent need for sustainable forestry practices. In response, the Institute is actively researching and implementing economic models for forested upland areas. We are committed to providing high-yield, high-value tree species, conserving genetic resources, and improving ecosystems to promote sustainable forestry development.
Thank you for visiting our website!
