On March 5, 2025, at Dong Hy High School, the extracurricular event “Climate Change Awareness Campaign” took place with great enthusiasm, attracting a large number of students and experienced trainers from the Learning Center for Emission Neutrality and Climate Resilience in Northern Vietnam (LEARN-VN) project. This meaningful activity aimed to equip the younger generation with knowledge and skills to identify and respond to climate change through innovative and interactive teaching methods.
This extracurricular session was part of a broader initiative to expand training sessions following the Training of Trainers (ToT) course on “Participatory Training Methods for Integrating Climate Change Knowledge.” The course was organized by the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen University, in collaboration with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR-ICRAF) under the LEARN-VN project. LEARN-VN (Learning Center for Emission Neutrality and Climate Resilience in Northern Vietnam) is an initiative that supports Vietnam’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The project’s main focus is establishing a climate learning center at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, located in Thai Nguyen City, Thai Nguyen Province. This center is designed to raise awareness, provide knowledge, and enhance the capacity of local communities, students, and young people, contributing to Vietnam’s climate goals, including net-zero emissions by 2050, greenhouse gas reduction, renewable energy development, forest coverage maintenance, and improving community resilience to climate change.
Engaging Activities and Expert Guidance
Under the guidance of trainers Do Thi Thu Hien, Tran Thi Yen Hoa, and Nguyen Thi Thuan, students not only gained valuable insights into climate change but also actively participated in group activities. They expressed their perspectives through creative drawings, innovative models, and engaging presentations.
Additionally, the event welcomed the participation of Ms. Tran Thi Thu Trang, Vice Principal of Dong Hy High School, and Ms. La Thu Phuong, a key trainer of the LEARN-VN project. Their support and encouragement played a crucial role in fostering a dynamic and creative learning environment for the students throughout the training session.
Innovative Solutions Proposed by Students
Students at Dong Hy High School went beyond learning about climate change; they proactively proposed innovative solutions to mitigate its adverse effects. Some of the most outstanding ideas presented through models included:
🔹 AI-Based Disaster Warning System: Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and modern sensors to detect early signs of flash floods and landslides, allowing timely preventive measures.
🔹 Wind Turbine Energy Generation: Harnessing wind energy to produce electricity, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
🔹 Waste Collection, Treatment, and Green Space Development: Proposing an effective waste sorting and recycling system while promoting tree planting to absorb CO₂ and protect the environment.
🔹 Afforestation and Renewable Energy Utilization: Encouraging the planting of mangroves and protective forests to safeguard ecosystems while leveraging renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to minimize climate change impacts.
Connecting Knowledge to Practical Action
This extracurricular training session not only provided knowledge but also inspired students to become “environmental ambassadors,” actively taking action for a sustainable future. Group activities, discussions, and interactive games allowed students to approach environmental issues in a vivid and engaging manner, fostering a deeper awareness and sense of responsibility towards nature.
