2-day training course: communication skills integrating climate change knowledge for students

Date

As part of the project “LEARNING CENTER FOR ZERO EMISSION AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE IN NORTHERN VIETNAM (LEARN-VN)”, the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development – Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen University, in collaboration with the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), organized a training course on “Communication Skills Integrating Climate Change Knowledge” for students of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen University.

The program took place over two days, with the participation of 30 students, 4 core trainers from the LEARN-VN project, and 1 supporting lecturer from the Faculty of Environment, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry – Thai Nguyen University:

🔹 Dr. Le Sy Hong
🔹 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Thi Lan
🔹 Dr. Hoang Quy Nhan
🔹 M.Sc. Hoang Ngoc Ha
🔹 Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Son Hai

Additionally, representatives from the project’s capacity-building component, Dr. Do Hoang Chung (Component Coordinator) and M.Sc. La Thu Phuong (Trainer), also participated, contributing to the overall quality of the training program.

The training course aimed to equip students with fundamental knowledge of climate change and effective communication skills to integrate this topic into community activities. The sessions were designed using learner-centered approaches, combining theory with practical exercises such as group work, case discussions, role-playing, and project presentations.

Throughout the program, students explored topics including:

• The concept and causes of climate change.
• The current state of global and national climate change in Vietnam.
• Mitigation and adaptation solutions, particularly in the agricultural and forestry sectors.
• Communication skills: communication techniques, active listening, questioning, feedback, and appreciation.
• Planning and organizing climate change communication campaigns.

One of the highlights of the training was the practical session on developing communication plans. Student groups engaged in discussions, designed, and presented creative communication strategies to raise public awareness of climate change. These ideas not only allowed students to apply their newly acquired knowledge but also contributed to spreading the message of environmental action.

With dedicated guidance from the trainers, students had the opportunity to enhance their practical skills and develop critical thinking in environmental communication. Upon completing the training, students received a certificate of completion and pledged to apply their skills and knowledge to future environmental communication campaigns. They will become “environmental ambassadors,” spreading messages about nature and climate protection within their communities.
