On 24 January, a working delegation comprising experts from IKEA Group (Sweden), the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development (Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry – Thai Nguyen University), Tan Trao University, and Woodsland Tuyen Quang Joint Stock Company conducted a field survey to support the implementation of a large-timber forest improvement project in the province.
According to expert assessments, Tuyen Quang is currently a national leader in the forestry economy, with a total planted forest area of approximately 232,000 hectares. Of this, more than 96,500 hectares have been certified under FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standards. Annual timber harvesting output reaches around 1.4 million cubic meters. Despite its strong potential, most of the existing forest area still consists of small-diameter timber, resulting in economic value that has yet to fully match its potential.
During the working session, scientists emphasized that to increase income value per unit area, organizations, enterprises, and forest households need to shift their production mindset, focusing on improving forest quality and transitioning from small-timber forests to large-timber forests. At present, IKEA Group, in collaboration with Woodsland JSC, has established a demonstration forest plantation model in Trung Son Commune.
This site serves as a practical learning and study destination, enabling forest owners to access advanced technical processes. Following the field survey, stakeholders committed to accompanying local communities through activities such as: providing in-depth technical support for sustainable forest management; supplying high-quality forestry seedlings; and facilitating value-chain linkages for forest owners interested in participating in the project.
The implementation of the project is expected to enhance economic value for forest owners and the forestry sector, while also contributing to environmental protection and sustainable development.
