To keep global warming below 1.5°C—the key goal of the Paris Agreement—the world must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 22 gigatons annually by 2030.
According to the UN-REDD Programme, a collaborative initiative by international organizations UNEP, UNDP, and FAO aimed at reducing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations by limiting deforestation and forest degradation, preventing deforestation alone could reduce emissions by 4 gigatons per year.
Meanwhile, deforestation causes the world to lose 10 million hectares of forest annually—an area equivalent to the size of Portugal. Tropical deforestation alone releases more than 5.6 billion tons of greenhouse gases each year, significantly contributing to global warming. This figure is over four times the combined emissions from aviation and shipping.
Forest protection and restoration are among the many nature-based solutions that countries can adopt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A UNEP report shows that this strategy could help cut emissions by 10–18 gigatons annually by 2050.
Protecting forests means protecting a sustainable future for our planet. Let’s join hands to fight climate change through our green forests!
