AUSTRALIAN ACACIA MANGIUM VARIETY

Date

In recent years, the Australian Acacia mangium variety has gained popularity and is highly regarded for its wood quality and yield across the country.

According to Mr. Vũ Văn Phán, Head of the Forest Protection Department of Thai Nguyen Province:
“Plant variety is a critical factor determining plantation productivity, so it is essential to select high-quality, certified seedlings. However, many local people tend to minimize costs, which, in the context of commercial forest plantations, can result in low efficiency. Currently, there are many Acacia varieties available in the province, but farmers are encouraged to select the Australian Acacia variety for afforestation. This is a high-quality species with fast growth, vigorous health, good tolerance to harsh weather conditions, and a short rotation cycle. Moreover, it produces good-quality timber with high economic value. If we choose Australian Acacia, the seedlings must have clear origins, proper coding, be sown with correct technical procedures, be healthy, of sufficient height, with intact apical shoots and no pests or diseases.”

The Institute of Forestry Research and Development is the core unit in the production and supply chain of Australian Acacia mangium seedlings for Thai Nguyen Province’s afforestation plan during the 2015–2020 period. The Institute is among the few units that import Acacia mangium seeds from CSIRO – Australia to meet the demands of both small- and large-scale forest plantations. Currently, Acacia seed lots imported by the Institute have been planted across 43 provinces in Vietnam, including Thai Nguyen, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Da Nang, Cao Bang, among others.

All seeds released from the Institute’s storage are guaranteed in terms of origin and quality, with full documentation including: financial invoices, seed import certification, and OTAS labels for traceability. For nurseries without prior experience, the Institute assigns technical staff to provide guidance on seedling propagation and care, ensuring the highest quality and survival rate of the seedlings when planted out.
